Encouragement:: Clutter (makes me cranky!)

I don’t know about you – but CLUTTER can make me so cranky.  The crazy thing is that comes over me like a big gust of wind.  All of a sudden – I can’t breathe because there is too much stuff around.

Over the weekend, I decided to do a little clutter clearing with my drawers and my closet.  They both were driving me nuts.  I wasn’t able to close the drawers – some were overflowing.  I didn’t even realize what was in there.  Turns out in my drawers, I was holding on to shirts from 2004.  Nuts right!?!

The closet – well that was a different story.  When we moved into our house, we had the master closer built.  There really wasn’t one – at least not a large enough one to hold all my stuff.  We had all these great shelves built and I went to the container store and bought these wonderful baskets to put things in.  They were used…maybe a bit too much.

Kinda scary huh?  (I made these pictures extra big so you could see the scariness.)  Well after a few hours of organizing – this is what she looks like.  And I have to say, it feels so good.

So you might be wondering how this pertains to business?  Well, clutter is overwelming, it’s an energy and creative sucker (not to mention it puts you in a bad mood and makes you feel unorganized).

FYI, my office is next on the list.  Here are some questions I’m going to be asking myself while I clear the clutter and create a space that I love and one that actually allows me to be creative and imaginative.

1) Books: Do I need them? Are they outdated?  Do I have 20 versions?

2) Papers & Files: Are they still a client? Is the information outdated? Can I consolidate the file? Can I keep an electronic copy (aka scan)?

3) Trinkets & Trash: Do I need to keep this as a reference?  Would I ever suggest this item to a client?

4) Notebooks: How many do I really need? (I have to be honest here…I really like notebooks, I may have a slight problem)

5) Nonessentials: How many pens do I really need in my drawers or on my desk?  How many packages of post-it notes do I need?

When people are organizing, they (meaning me) want to head out and buy the super cute containers.  DON’T do it.  Trust me when I say that I have done that very thing so many times.  Who’s with me?  Then you clear your space and what you bought doesn’t fit.  Well, this time…this girl is not going to be doing that.  

Wish me luck – the office clearing starts today!  I love my closet, now I’m going to love my office.  Bye Bye cranky lady!

*SIDE NOTE: Nothing was harmed in the drawers or closet – everything was donated to Good Will.

Keisha – great idea with the priority boxes and bringing in the teenager. 🙂 Lisa – I think flexibility is key. I like the idea of one room at a time. I really need to get to the garage, but I have a feeling that is going to be the last place hit because it's just a scary beast.

Great post! I just started reorganizing and de-cluttering my work/craft room and plan to do a post about it – will share on DiD. Some things I did were Organize all my paper by color (for invites, banners, party decor) and I used those Priority Mail boxes from USPS to make paper holders! I am going section by section and trying to consolidate as I go along. Tossing/donating anything that I really and truly do not need or use. I didn't really truly organize, I have straightened up the space enough to where I decided to let a friend's teenage daughter come over and help me really streamline everything. Right now, I just grouped mostly everything into areas of my space where they belong. Now, I will have my little helper neaten everything up and file things away!

I totally agree that clutter=cranky. I do bi-annual de-clutters and re-organizations and I always feel so much better afterward, but I dread doing them because it always seems so ominous and once I get started, I don't want to do anything else until I am done (I am a little obsessive-compulsive). This year I am trying to allow myself some flexibility and am doing a room a week. So far, so good and I am less cranky without the pressure. Kitchen done, closet next on the list.
